One of my forever favorite books is this one.
It is the memoirs of Elizabeth Kecklie, a woman born a slave who became a seamstress, bought her own freedom and became Mary Todd Lincoln’s personal asistant and closest friend.
One of very few black women who could read and write, she was much maligned, after Lincoln’s death, for attempting to publish this book which reveals secrets and insights from within the Lincoln White House.
Her voice in the book is brilliant and intimate. It transports you immediately to her side. You will look up, disorriented by this century.
Elizabeth Keckley is certainly smiling now.
